Ancient Civilisations

The civilisations of Egypt, Greece and Rome are endlessly fascinating even though thousands of years have past. Come with us to explore their beauty and their mystery.

Greece

Many classicists hold the view that Greece was the greatest civilisation of the ancient world.  Not only did it give us art, philosophy and technology, but we owe it, too, so much of our mathematics and science, and above all the idea of democracy.

Egypt

It is more than five thousand years since Upper and Lower Egypt were united into a single kingdom with its capital at Memphis, and it is hard to appreciate that it was to be more than five hundred years from this time before the great pyramids and the Sphinx were constructed at Giza.

Our groups visiting Cairo on a five-day tour visit all these sites together with the step pyramid at Saqqara.  A day is spent exploring old Cairo, and another in Alexandria.

Groups on our eight day tour combine Cairo and its nearby antiquities with Luxor, Thebes and Aswan, ancient Egypt’s gateway to Africa.

Imperial Rome

Of all the great civilisations of the past, Rome is probably the one best known in Britain – not least because for more than three hundred and fifty years Great Britain south of Caledonia was a part of its empire.

Our tours to Italy may take you either to the seat of power in Rome itself, to the Bay of Naples with its remains of the cities destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius, or to a combination of both.
